The Filling of the Holy Spirit (Part 2)

Last time, we established that Scripture commands us to be filled with the Spirit, which means it is possible to be a believer and not filled with the Spirit. However, anyone who is a believer in Christ is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Before we look at what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and what that "looks like" in the life of the believer, let us consider what prevents a believer from being filled with the Spirit.

It is interesting that Scripture gives us no recipe or instructions on how to be filled with the Spirit. However, one thing we are called to do is to not grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). The word for "grieve" is the Greek word lupeo, which means "to make sorrowful, to offend, to affect with sadness." In the context of Ephesians 4, this verse is surrounded with verses addressing specific sins that someone may commit - from anger, stealing, corrupt talk, deceit, slander and others. In other words, what is it that grieves the Holy Spirit? Sin and disobedience. We will explore this a little more next time. But the first issue for us to realize is that we cannot persist in sin and also want to be filled with the Spirit.

Too often, we can view the filling of the Spirit as a supernatural outpouring from God. In a way, I guess it is. But more simply, it is something that should naturally be taking place in the life of the believer, but the presence of sin in our lives will prevent the filling of the Spirit from taking place in our lives.

Come to Think of It...

I have now been in pastoral ministry for 14 years, in about 2 weeks, I will celebrate 11 years at Lighthouse. In that time, I will often get calls or e-mails from people considering coming to visit the church. In those calls, I am usually asked a question about any number of theological issues. I have been asked for my position on healing, tongues, my interpretation of Romans 7, what Bible translation I use, just to name a few. It dawned on me today the one question I have never once been asked by a potential visitor to the church. Not one person has ever asked me about my prayer life.

Once, when I was asked my position on healing, I used Scripture to explain that I believe in healing, but I do not believe that God heals everyone - He heals or does not heal based on His sovereign will. My refusal to believe in healing for everyone in everything was enough to cause this person to refuse to even visit the church.

It is interesting that people are more concerned with whether we see exactly eye to eye on every secondary theological issue, yet none of them seem to care whether or not I am a man of prayer. I can't help but think that this is yet another symptom of the lack of revival in our day - we care more if a preacher agrees with our theology of the End Times than we care of the preacher is a man of prayer.

The Filling of the Holy Spirit (Part 1)

Because this is an issue which has brought on much debate among Christians, as well as the fact that much of our understanding on this issue comes from experience rather than Scripture, I want to take a look over the next few weeks at what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit and how this happens in the life of the Christian.

Perhaps the most common passage referring to this is Ephesians 5:18. This passage also commands that we not be drunk with wine, but that we be "filled with the Holy Spirit." The Greek word used here for "fill" is ple-ro-o, which means "fill up, fill to the full, fill to the top, to make complete."

I would like to make three observations on this verse. First of all, Ephesians is written to believers to help them understand who they are in Christ and what that should mean for their daily lives. So, we find this command to be filled with the Spirit addressed to Christians. While every Christian in indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9), we can conclude that not every Christian is filled with the Spirit. If every Christian automatically was filled with the Spirit upon conversion, why are they being commanded to do it? Commanding someone to something implies that it may or may not currently be true of them. We will explore this more later on, but we should at least see that every Christian has the Holy Spirit, but not every Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit.

Second, the grammar being used here does not suggest a one time event. It suggests an ongoing command to keep on being filled with the Spirit. In other words, a Christian does not get filled with the Spirit and remains filled for the rest of their life. It is an ongoing command, which means you can be filled with the Spirit at one time in your life, but not at another time in your life.

Third, the command to be filled with the Spirit is passive rather than active. We will be looking at the responsibility that we have in this process (how can you command someone to do something that they have no part in?), but we cannot fill ourselves. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit. If I want a bucket to be filled with water, I need to make sure the lid is off the bucket and there are no holes in it so that it can be filled (passively). In the same way, we do have a role to play in keeping our lives "fill-able" but it is the Holy Spirit who fills us, not our own goodness or power.

So, with those points established by way of introduction, in my next post we will start adding more pieces to the puzzle.

About the event

10 years ago, we held our first Prayer Conference at Lighthouse Alliance Church. This eventually became our Bible & Prayer Conference. These events were designed to give us an intensive time of seeking the heart of God together. In the 10th anniversary of this event, we will be gathering in this mini-retreat format to earnestly come into the presence of God and seek His face together. Sessions will involve times of teaching and instruction, worship, corporate prayer, as well as times for personal ministry in prayer. If the fire in your heart for the Lord is fading, if you've hit a dry spot in your walk with Christ, or if you are looking to fuel an already blazing fire, this weekend is just for you!

Recently, I have been going through the complete works of E.M. Bounds on prayer. In his book, The Possibilities of Prayer, he makes this challenge:

"More praying must be done and better praying if the church shall be able to perform the difficult, delicate, and responsible task given to it by her Lord and master. Defeat awaits a nonpraying church. Success is sure to follow a church given to much prayer. The supernatural element in the church, without which it must fail, comes only through praying. More time, in this busy bustling age, must be given to prayer by a God-called church. More thought must be given to prayer in this thoughtless, silly age of superficial religion. More heart and soul must be in the praying that is done if the church would go forth in the strength of her Lord and perform the wonders which is her heritage by divine promise."

If he saw this to be true in the mid 1800's, how much more could be it said today? Bottom line - you can never pray enough!

Help Decide the Next ABIDE! Workshop

So, why am I fixated on workshops? Well, I feel that workshops provide a unique way to help people work through some practical issues on any given topic. The downside is whether or not the material covered becomes nice stuff in a binder somewhere, or if it is actually put into practice. We recently put on our first Intentional Spiritual Life Workshop which received very positive and encouraging feedback. In a few weeks, we will be hosting the Spiritual Gifts Development Workshop. The Chuck Smith Controversy

Perhaps you've come across the buzz online over the past few days pertaining to Chuck Smith (Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa). I know in the grand scheme of things, my opinion is not been sought out by many. However, as someone who has spoken often, including on ABIDE! Radio, about my admiration for Pastor Chuck Smith, I feel like I should add my voice for whatever it is worth.

If you do not know, during his radio program (Pastor's Perspective) last week, a woman called in looking for his advice because of her pregnancy. In short, she is pregnant with conjoined twins and her doctors have made it clear that the life expectancy is extremely low, added to the fact that her life may be in danger if she proceeds with the pregancy. The doctors are encouraging her to have an abortion. She is a wife and mother of a young daughter. She was clearly burdened and emotional during her call to Pastor Chuck. Bascially, Pastor Chuck did not encourage her to have an abortion, but sought to assure her that the Lord would show her grace if that is what she ended up doing. This has caused quite a stir. And, as we Christians are too good at doing, this has resulted in an all out attack on Pastor Chuck.

Before I go further, let me add another piece to the background. During the same show the next day, someone called-in asking him to clarify his answer. Pastor Chuck affirmed that he is against abortion, and sees it as sin. However, he added that in cases where the mother's life is in danger, it is not quite as cut and dry. This has been seen by some as a lie because they say the woman never said her life was in danger. As I carefully listened to the segment myself, it is clear that the woman implied such as she mentioned the danger of complications and how this bothered her because of her young daughter. However a person choses to respond to Pastor Chuck's counsel to her, he did not lie to cover his tracks.

Before I continue, let me be clear - yes, I do like Pastor Chuck. I am not a Calvary Chapel pastor. However, I have seen him as a distant "mentor" when it comes to ministry. I have no vested interested in attacking or defending Pastor Chuck.

First of all, I do have to say that I disagree with his advice. I am against abortion. I would never encourage any woman to ever abort her baby under any circumstance. In addition, I would not been so quick to make a woman considering an abortion feel better about doing so. I would have counseled her to consider the seriousness of killing the baby and to get a second medical opinion and to fast and pray about this carefully. This is a decision left best to her and her husband in prayer. In any counseling scenario, I have tried to avoid giving too much advice and prefer to help someone keep all the facts in mind as they seek the Lord's direction.

There are many people jumping to conclusions, in my opinion. There is so much about this that we do not know. All we heard is the phone conversation. We do not know what, if any, additional information may have been given to Pastor Chuck by a call screener, if there was one. We assume that her doctors are a bunch of liberal, kill babies at all costs doctors. We can find all sorts of stories about similar situations where mother and babies were fine. However, I'm sure there are equal number of stories that do not turn out that way. Many say that, in this case, the mother needs to trust God and go ahead, willing to die if necessary. I am not arguing for or against that. All I will say is that the view is pretty good here from the cheap seats. It is not my wife in that position. It is not my daughter in danger of losing her Mommy. It is not my daughter facing this decision.

For all we know, this woman may have consulted several good doctors who have come to the painful conclusion, for her situation. It is nice to compare medical stories, but in the end, medical issues can be so very different from patient to patient. I think we need to pause and realize that there is a whole lot that we do not know about the details behind this situation.

I know that Pastor Chuck has a lot of "enemies." Conservative Fundamentalists do not like him because he is too charismatic and shows too much grace to the TBN's of the world. Liberals do not like him because he is too much of a Bible literalist.  Many Charismatics do not like him because he does not support a spiritual gifts free for all. He is not a Calvinist or an Arminian. I have a feeling there are some who were waiting in the shadows to jump on him for anything.

Some solid believers are just saddened that a pastor did not talk her out of considering an abortion. I would best fit with this group. I would join those in this category of praying for this woman. This is a very sad situation all around.

So far, Todd Friel (Wretched Radio) has had the best summary of this situation that I have seen. He affirms that Pastor Chuck made a bad call. However, we must remember that this is a man who has faithfully served the Lord for more than 50 years and has never once wavered on the Gospel. He is well within "orthodox Christianity."

Do I disgree with his advice? Yes. Is my conclusion based on limited information? Yes.  Because of that, I am not willing to throw him under the bus. I am not going to join the cry for his resignation.

What I will do is add my voice to beg my brothers and sisters in Christ to stop it. Somewhere along the way, we have embraced an all or nothing test for Christian brotherhood. I found myself drifting into this some time ago, as well. What I mean is that if someone does not line up with us perfectly on every point about everything, we label them a heretic, take up pithcforks and torches and declare war on them.

Here is how I would summarize the Chuck Smith situation. Perhaps information was passed on to him from a call screener making it clear that this woman has pursued all options and is facing the reality of what she must do if she wants to survive for her little girl. As a Christian, she is grieved and broken over this, and perhaps paranoid (from other Christians) that having an abortion will mean that she will lose her salvation and burn in hell. Why do I suspect this? Because what I heard in Pastor Chuck's response was a concern for this woman and trying to comfort her and minister to her. Someone can strongly disagree with his counsel to her, but launching an all out attack is out of place for us.

As a pastor, I have wrestled in prayer and lost enough sleep over how to help people in crisis to assume that Pastor Chuck was at least not flippant in his response. Until I hear otherwise, I have a feeling that he knew something that we do not. Whatever I may feel about his response to this woman, my lack of information and his 50+ year track record, I am unable to call him to walk the plank. I Know, I Know...

I feel like I have been testing the patience of the ABIDE! Radio faithful lately. Perhaps you noticed that there was no show today. That was a last minute decision made because I felt like I needed to be with the Lord. Over the past couple of months, we have made several changes and tried several things. It may be a bit frustrating. For that, I am truly sorry. One of the biggest trials we have done in all of this is taking ABIDE! Radio from a 1-hour weekly podcast to a daily show on BlogTalk Radio. In all honesty, I love doing the show every day.

However, something has been on my heart for a few weeks now - so, no, what I am about to say is not a snap decision. Every day, ABIDE! Radio exists for one main purpose - to encourage you to spend time with God every day. And, in doing so, many of you have taken 30-minutes every day to listen. Words cannot express how grateful I am and how humbled I am to know that people actually listen to the show.

That being said, it is heavy on my heart that I "put my money where my mouth is." Until I sense God leading me to do the show every day, ABIDE! Radio will no longer air 5 days a week. While next week will be a bit choppy, starting in 2 weeks, ABIDE! Radio will drop down to 2 days a week. At this time, I just do not feel right about asking people to spend 2.5 hours a week listening to our show, when they could be investing that time with the Lord. We will still be here every Tuesday and Thursday to "cheer" you on.

Right now, we spend 2 days a week in Bible study, 1 day talking evangelism, and 2 days in topical conversations. We will continue to use the Tuesday show to do our Bible study show. I am still praying over the logistics, but we will either continue in Mark or rotate between Mark and Leviticus. Either way, both studies will be made available in "sermon form" on both on this site, as well as at the Lighthouse Alliance Church site. The Thursday show will be our one topical show for the week. As for the evangelism show, let's just say that I am not needed for that. Programs like the daily episodes of On the Box with Tony and Chad, and Wretched Raio do a far superior job building people up in evangelism than I could ever do.

As a team, we are praying through what the two shows a week will look like. Either both shows will feature the whole ABIDE! Radio team, or I will do the Bible study show on my own and the topical show with Chris and Ryan.

While ABIDE! TV will be on hold for the next 2 weeks, that will more than likely return, even if not necessarily every week. My thought right now is to make a video available on Wednesdays.

With this change, I would like to focus more on writing. Part of that will be going back to a text version of the ABIDE! Today devotional thoughts a couple of times a week, with the audio mixed in the other days. I am also close to finishing the final edit of The Intentional Spiritual Life. I also have the new believer's Bible study, Cultivate in the works, as well as the "sequel" Living the Intentional Spiritual Life.

I want to thank you for your patience with me as I have tried a few things on for size to see what will work and what will not work. It is my prayer that this ministry can encourage you and challenge you in your walk with Christ. But I do not want, for even a second, for the show to get in the way of your spending time with God.

Not only that, because this is only one apsect of my ministry, I cannot allow the show to dominate more than it should. Not just with Lighthouse, but even in terms of having the time to develop quality workshops like the Intentional Spiritual Life and Spiritual Gifts workshops.

During my interview on 1220 AM yesterday, I referenced some statistics of Christians and their prayer and Bible reading habits. I stated one survey saying that the average Christian prayed for 3 hours a day. If only that were true! Not sure how I messed that one up, but the correct number is 3 minutes a day.

Read the Bible in 120 Days

Did you know that only 10% of Christians have read the entire Bible? Why not change that in the next 4 months? Will you join us in reading through the entire Bible in 120 days beginning February 1st and running through May 31st? We will provide some ways to encourage and support you, but you need to make the commitment.

If we can iron out some kinks, we will have each day's reading on our Calendar (see tab above), but here is the full list. It may be helpful for you to copy this into a Word document and create a bookmarker to keep in your Bible. This plan will take you through the New Testament in 30 days and the Old Testament in 90 days. Out thanks to Beth M. for structuring this plan.

Now, why start in the New Testament? Many times, people start to read through the entire Bible and "lose steam" once they get halfway through Exodus and start reading about the measurements for the Tabernacle. While this is an important section of Scripture, it is the point where people often give up. It is said that it takes about 28 days to develop a habit. Too many times, we give up on reading the Bible before we get to the 28th day. With this plan, you will start in the New Testament which will get you through that 28 day window. After that, you will switch to the Old Testament once you have established the habit of daily reading.

God's Sense of Humor

One of the things that most stood out to me in this clip is the woman who reasoned that since God has a sense of humor (He puts up with us every day) then that means we can make a mockery out of anything we want. I see and hear that comment in more and more ways, including one church who did a skit protraying Jesus and the apostles during the Last Supper as someone at the table could not control their...well, bodily function.

I believe Todd Friel does a great job, especially in relation to the Kennedy assasination as to why the Dorito communion is not funny. Let me take that a little further. First of all, in response to the woman on the news clip, God's patience with us is not a reflection of His sense of humor, but rather His kindness to us, giving us time to repent before we stand before Him on Judgement Day (2 Peter 3:9).

Too often God's "sense of humor" is used as an excuse for any and all forms of blasphemy. First of all, maybe God does have a sense of humor. But I think we make a little too much of that. There is a huge push to portray Jesus as joyful and light-hearted. Scripture says that He was a man of sorrows aquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). I am not saying that Jesus never laughed. But why is it that we are more concerned with seeing a laughing Jesus than we are a holy Jesus? Our culture makes a sense of humor a high quality to desire, while Scripture reserves that for holiness (1 Peter 1:16). Again, I am not saying that holiness and a sense of humor are mutually exclusive. Mine is simply a question of emphasis.

My main point here is that if God has a sense of humor, that does not mean He laughs at everything. I like to think that I have a sense of humor. However, that does not mean that I am light-hearted about everything, especially about things that are important. My sense of humor is not brought into question if you use any member of my family as the punchline to a dirty joke. I am not required to lay the reputation of my family on the altar of "good fun." If someone makes a mockery of the things of God, it is not up to them to excuse their actions because they declare God to have a sense of humor.

To add to Todd's comparison to the Kennedy assination to sell Nerf guns, consider a tragedy that may have taken the life of one of your loved ones, or brought harm to a loved one. It is fine to be light-hearted about light-hearted things. But it is not "all in good fun" when we make a mockery of things are important - in this case, the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus.

If I told you that I was in training for an event, it would be resonable for you to assume that I am following some type of training program. If I want to train to run a marathon, but I am not running daily, and never increase how far I run daily, you will question if I am serious about my training. Also, you would rightly conclude that I will not finish the marathon, if I even participate.

What is your spiritual training program? Could you describe to someone, right now, the details of what you are doing to "get in shape" spiritually? A half-hearted, informal approach does not cut it when it comes to a marathon, do we really think it will be any different in our spiritual development?

Sometimes we can get caught up living for our own fame. We would never say this, but deep down we realize it is true. We are offended when someone wrongs us. We are hurt when we do not receive the recognition or thanks we feel that we deserve. Our feelings are hurt when someone doesn't return our calls. All of these can be subtle reflections of our desire for our own fame. How often do we seek to live every moment in such a way that the fame is Jesus is made known in and through us? When God's power is poured out, do we make Him famous, or try to share the credit? Do you seek answers to prayer so that our lives can be more comfortable, or so that the answered prayer can increase the fame of Jesus?

As we begin our 3rd year of ministry, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who listens to ABIDE! Radio. We are so blessed by you, and we pray that this show has been and will continue to be a blessing to you. I pray that our recent changes have been positive ones for you. While we are grateful for the new listeners God has recently brought us, we never want to lose the faithful listeners who have been with us all along. I am so grateful to have Chris and Ryan with me for our Monday and Friday shows. I have been blessed to work with them over the last few weeks and I am excited about what they each bring to the show.

Starting this week, we are taking a "bold" step by making ABIDE! Radio a daily program. We know that some may not be able to join us every day, but we pray that you are able to listen when you can. It is my prayer that making this a daily show, it can better encourage you to walk with Jesus daily. However, please never allow listening to ABIDE! Radio to squeeze out time that you should be spending with Jesus. That would defeat the purpose of the show.

While we will no longer be posting the audio from each show directly on our web site, there are several ways that you can listen to ABIDE! Radio right here on the web site. We have installed the media player on the right side bar where you can click to listen to the most recent episodes. Also, you can go to the ABIDE! Radio page and click on to get the complete archive for every show we have ever done for 2009, 2010, and we have already started the 2011 archive page.

So, with the new daily format, what will the "schedule" be?

We will continue taking Mondays to study through a book of the New Testament - right now we are going through the Gospel of Mark.

Tuesdays will be spent going through a book of the Old Testament - you will have to tune in this Tuesday to find out where we will be!

Wednesdays will focus on particular issues that fall under the umbrella of what I can "intentional spiritual living" - specifically helping us cultivate daily time with God. We will open up the phone lines every Wednesday, as well.

On Thursdays, we will continue our Old Testament study from Tuesdays, but we will shift gears and use Thursdays to talk about evangelism during the spring and summer months.

Fridays will continue to be a bit of a "free for all" as we discuss a variety of topics related to living the Christian life.

Just a reminder that our chat room will be open during every show. Stop by, say hi, ask questions, or just fellowship together.
